Pirates sign nine minor league free agents12/14/2006 4:20 PM ET
The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following nine players to minor league contracts with an invitation to major league spring training camp.
RHP John Wasdin - Spent the 2006 season in the Texas organization...Went 3-3 with a 2.00 ERA (63.0ip/14er) in 13 games (nine starts) with Oklahoma (Rangers' AAA) and 2-2 with a 5.10 ERA (30.0ip/17er) in nine games (five starts) with the Rangers ...Has gone 38-38 with seven saves and a 5.26 ERA (773.2ip/452er) in 316 career games (65 starts) in the big leagues with Oakland, Boston, Colorado, Baltimore, Toronto and Texas...Was also in the Pittsburgh organization in 2003 before being traded to Toronto on July 8.
RHP Kip Bouknight - Spent a majority of the 2006 campaign with Harrisburg (Nationals' AA), where he went 6-8 with a 4.55 ERA (124.2ip/63er) in 21 starts...Also went 3-0 with a 4.64 ERA (33.0ip/17er) in six starts with New Orleans (Nationals' AAA) in 2006...Has a career minor league record of 45-39 with one save and a 4.10 ERA (818.2ip/373er) in 153 games (133 starts).
RHP Allan Simpson - Spent all but two games with Nashville (Brewers' AAA) in 2006, where he went 2-4 with 10 saves and a 3.34 ERA (56.2ip/21er) in 42 relief appearances...Also made two relief appearances with the Brewers...Has gone 2-2 with a 6.06 ERA (49.0ip/33er) in 45 relief appeances during big league career with Colorado, Cincinnati and Milwaukee...Averaged 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in 2004 with Colorado, which ranked second among all rookie relievers in the majors behind Pittsbugh's Mike Gonzalez (11.4).
RHP Jim Brower - Played with three different organizations in 2006 (Baltimore, San Diego and Florida)...Has gone 33-32 with five saves and a 4.62 ERA (570.2ip/293er) in 351 career major league games (28 starts) with Cleveland, Cincinnati, Montreal, San Francisco, Atlanta, Baltimore and San Diego...Had a major league leading 89 appearances during the 2004 campaign with San Francisco...Ranked eighth among all National League pitchers with 261 appearances from 2002-05 .
C David Parrish - Played four games with Columbus (Yankees' AAA) to begin 2006 season before signing with Pittsburgh organization as a minor league free agent on May 14...Hit .292 (70-for-240) with 15 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 32 RBI in 72 games with Double-A Altoona...Has a .249 career average (461-for-1854) with 104 doubles, five triples, 28 home runs and 233 RBI in 565 minor league games.
INF Eddy Garabito - Hit .257 (122-for-474) with 24 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 46 RBI in 128 games with Ottawa (Orioles' AAA) in 2006... Batted .307 (27-for-88) with five doubles, one home run and eight RBI in 42 games with Colorado Rockies in 2004...Has a lifetime average of .267 (1238-for-4634) with 232 doubles, 49 triples, 56 home runs and 513 RBI in 1196 minor league games.
INF Don Kelly - Hit a combined .250 (111-for-444) with 25 doubles, four triples and 43 RBI between Toledo (Tigers' AAA) and Erie (Tigers' AA) in 2006...Has produced a career average of .286 (613-for-2147) with 112 doubles, 22 triples, 13 home runs and 254 RBI in 584 games in the minors since being drafted by Detroit in the eighth round of the 2001 draft...Attended Point Park College in downtown Pittsburgh...Is also a 1998 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, located just south of Pittsburgh.
OF Michael Ryan - Hit .242 (88-for-363) with 18 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 39 RBI in 110 games with Richmond (Braves' AAA) in 2006...Was originally selected by Minnesota in the fifth round of the 1996 draft...Has a .265 lifetime batting average (69-for-260) with 14 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 33 RBI in 127 big league games over parts of four seasons (2002-05) with Minnesota...Is a 1996 graduate of Indiana Area (PA) High School.
OF Chris Aguila - Split the 2006 season between Florida and Albuquerque (Marlins' AAA)...Hit .232 (22-for-95) with eight doubles, one triple and seven RBI in 47 games with the Marlins and .318 (96-for-302) with 15 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 61 RBI in 78 games with Albuquerque...Has a career average of .234 (51-for-218) with 13 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 16 RBI in 141 games in parts of three seasons (2004-06) with Florida.
