The Deal: Boston lands a terrific switch-hitter, versatile player and solid clubhouse influence -- but not necessarily Jason Varitek's heir apparent behind plate. Martinez has increasingly been splitting his time at first, but that means he also provides added insurance for Mike Lowell's balky hip, freeing Kevin Youkilis to play across the diamond. Martinez is a near-.300 career hitter with comparable power from both sides. For all that, the Sox paid a steep price in a trio of former high-draft choices with high ceilings. Masterson (2nd round '06) has already made his big-league mark (9-8 in Boston, with a solid ERA), Price (1st round '08) has both closing and starting experience and Hagadone (1st round '07) is already pushing triple-digits on the radar in his comeback from Tommy John surgery.

The Deal: The Padres have been trying to deal Peavy and his $63 million guaranteed contract since last winter and the former Cy Young Award winner, because of a blanket no-trade clause, turned down a deal to the Pale Hose as recently as the end of May. He's been on the disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon in his right foot and the big question is when he'll be ready to pitch in Chicago? In exchange, the Padres get four young pitchers to restock their system, including one -- Richard -- who has pitched 26 games (14 starts) for the Sox this season. The others have all toiled in the Minor Leagues.
