The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have selected 21-year-old right-handed pitcher BRYAN BULLINGTON with the first overall pick in the annual first-year player draft. The announcement was made by Ed Creech, the Pirates Director of Scouting.

As a junior at Ball State University this season, Bullington went 11-3 with a 2.84 ERA, 139 strikeouts and 18 walks in 104.2 innings of work. He was named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year after setting a MAC record in strikeouts and leading the league in victories and ERA. The 6'5", 225-pound hurler was ranked by Baseball America as having the best breaking ball and best command among all college pitchers.

"Bryan Bullington is a big, strong, durable right-handed pitcher with a power arm," said Ed Creech, the Pirates Director of Scouting. "He has a variety of pitches which will allow him to be a solid major league pitcher."

The Pirates, picking first for just the third time in the 38-year history of the annual draft (they selected Jeff King first in 1986 and Kris Benson first in 1996), have chosen a college player for the second straight year and for the third time in the last five years.

In his three-year career with Ball State, Bullington posted a 29-11 record, 13 complete games and a 3.36 ERA in 46 games (42 starts). He is the university's all-time leader in strikeouts (357) and was a member of the 2001 USA National team. As a freshman, Bryan garnered all-conference honors and led the MAC in strikeouts. He was also named the 2001 MAC Pitcher-of-the-Year.

"We are very happy to select Bryan Bullington with the number one pick in this year's draft," said Dave Littlefield, the Pirates Senior Vice President and General Manager. "With his determination and competitive nature, we feel he will be a great asset to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization."
