Southpaw struck on throwing hand in sixth inning
ST.LOUIS -- Pirates starter Tom Gorzelanny left Thursday's series finale against the Cardinals with a left thumb contusion after getting hit by a line drive in the sixth inning.
Aaron Miles ripped a hot shot back to the left-hander and he couldn't get out of the way quickly enough. The ball struck him on the left thumb.
Gorzelanny had already thrown 118 pitches in the game and was taken out. X-rays were negative.
Gorzelanny went 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on 10 hits. He left with the Pirates trailing, 2-0.
