Rockies on the mound: Aaron Cook was impressive in three innings of work, as he allowed just two hits and one run while striking out a pair. The lone run he allowed came on Young's first-pitch homer. Kip Wells, who is fighting for a rotation spot, followed Cook and gave up one run on two hits over three innings. The right-hander allowed three walks.
D-backs on the mound: Micah Owings was scheduled to start, but was scratched in the morning after complaining of general arm soreness. Nippert started in his place and struggled with his command in the first, allowing back-to-back walks to Giles and Helton before Hawpe's homer. Clint Goocher, who was called over from Minor League camp for the day, tossed a scoreless fifth. Cactus League records: Rockies 3-2; D-backs 2-3-1. Up next: The Rockies will play the Royals at Hi Corbett Field on Tuesday, with right-handed No. 3 prospect Ubaldo Jimenez starting. Rotation hopeful Victor Zambrano also is scheduled to pitch. Ian Stewart will get his crack at second base. Todd Helton and Matt Holliday will have the day off from the starting lineup.Steve Gilbert is a reporter for MLB.com.
