Rockies at the plate: Brad Hawpe collected his first homer of the spring in the first inning when he smacked a 2-0 pitch from Dustin Nippert over the wall in right to score Marcus Giles and Todd Helton. Hawpe walked his second time up. Yorvit Torrealba drove home Helton in the sixth with a two-out double to left. Torrealba scored when Ian Stewart followed with a ground-ball single to center.

D-backs at the plate: Chris Young hit a two-out solo homer in the third to get the D-backs on the board. Young was 0-for-8 this spring before the homer. Orlando Hudson tripled with two outs in the first, but was stranded when Mark Reynolds flied to right. Gerardo Parra continued his hot spring with a double in the fifth. He scored one out later when Young doubled to left. Donnie Kelly capped the scoring in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run homer to right off Darren Clarke.

Rockies on the mound: Aaron Cook was impressive in three innings of work, as he allowed just two hits and one run while striking out a pair. The lone run he allowed came on Young's first-pitch homer. Kip Wells, who is fighting for a rotation spot, followed Cook and gave up one run on two hits over three innings. The right-hander allowed three walks.

D-backs on the mound: Micah Owings was scheduled to start, but was scratched in the morning after complaining of general arm soreness. Nippert started in his place and struggled with his command in the first, allowing back-to-back walks to Giles and Helton before Hawpe's homer. Clint Goocher, who was called over from Minor League camp for the day, tossed a scoreless fifth.

Cactus League records: Rockies 3-2; D-backs 2-3-1.

Up next: The Rockies will play the Royals at Hi Corbett Field on Tuesday, with right-handed No. 3 prospect Ubaldo Jimenez starting. Rotation hopeful Victor Zambrano also is scheduled to pitch. Ian Stewart will get his crack at second base. Todd Helton and Matt Holliday will have the day off from the starting lineup.
