Yankees at the plate: With most of the team's starters not making the trip south, the Yankees didn't have much going at the plate all afternoon. Hideki Matsui and Chris Woodward were the only starters to get a hit against Pirates lefty Paul Maholm.

Pirates at the plate: Third baseman Jose Bautista finished the day 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Xavier Nady had two extra-base hits of his own on Sunday as well, and he scored both times that he reached base. Infielder Luis Rivas, who appears to be set as Freddy Sanchez's replacement until the All-Star returns to the field, had two more hits and has now reached base in 14 of the 16 games he has played this spring.

Yankees on the mound: After starting against Virginia Tech on Tuesday, Jeff Karstens made his first official Spring Training start on Sunday. The right-hander was hit around for four runs and seven hits in his three innings of work. Scott Strickland and Heath Phillips followed Karstens and combined to throw two scoreless innings in relief.

Pirates on the mound: Maholm became the first Pirates starter to pitch six innings this spring on Sunday. Maholm limited the New York lineup to just two hits. Jaret Wright pitched a scoreless seventh inning, giving him his third straight shutout appearance.

Grapefruit League records: Yankees 12-8-2, Pirates 9-15.

Up next for the Yankees: The Yankees will meet the Phillies two more times in the final week of Spring Training, beginning with a 7:15 p.m. ET home game against the defending National League East champions on Monday. Right-hander Phil Hughes will make the start for New York against Philadelphia lefty Jamie Moyer. The game will be the second to last one for the Yankees at Legends Field this spring.

Up next for the Pirates: The Pirates will give it a second go-around in St. Petersburg on Monday, as they travel north to face the Rays for the second time in three days. Saturday's contest between the two teams was rained out after two innings. First pitch on Monday -- which is the one-week mark until Opening Day -- will be at 1:05 p.m. ET. Pittsburgh right-hander Matt Morris will make the start against Tampa Bay righty Edwin Jackson.
