Rays name all-time team at Al Lang
Front office selects immortals from field's 87-year history
ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays released their all-time Al Lang Field Team on Friday prior to the final game played at the historic ballpark.
Members of the Rays' front office selected the players from the following teams that held Spring Training on the site: Boston Braves (1922-37), New York Yankees (1925-42, 1946-50, 1952-61), St. Louis Cardinals (1938-42, 1946-97), New York Giants (1951), New York Mets (1962-87), Baltimore Orioles (1992-95) and the Rays (1998-2008).
The players include:
Catcher: Yogi Berra and Gary Carter
First base: Stan Musial and Lou Gehrig
Second base: Rogers Hornsby and Red Schoendienst
Third base: Wade Boggs and Ken Boyer
Shortstop: Ozzie Smith and Cal Ripken
Outfield: Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Monte Irvin, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Lou Brock, Babe Ruth and Darryl Strawberry
Starting pitcher: Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Whitey Ford and Steve Carlton
Closer: Dennis Eckersley and Lee Smith
