Phillies at the plate: Though the Phillies finished the day with seven hits, the club combined for just four before stringing together three straight in the ninth. Offseason addition Raul Ibanez got the Phillies on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the third. Outfielder John Mayberry then drove in Philadelphia's only other run of the afternoon with a ninth-inning single. Non-roster invitee Jeremy Slayden and outfielder Geoff Jenkins each contributed two base hits early. First baseman Ryan Howard finished 0-for-2 with a strikeout.

Pirates at the plate: Pittsburgh broke out for seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings led by Shelby Ford's three-run homer over the right-field wall. Ford entered the game to take over at second after Freddy Sanchez finished 2-for-2 on the day with an RBI double. Infielders Jack Wilson, Anderson Machado and Steve Pearce also contributed run-scoring base hits in the win. Pedro Alvarez, the overall No. 2 pick in last June's First-Year Player Draft, struck out in his first Spring Training at-bat.

Phillies on the mound: Lefty Jamie Moyer pitched the first two innings for the defending World Series champions and kept the Pirates scoreless despite allowing two walks and a single. He finished with two strikeouts. The day wasn't so kind for relievers Joe Bisenius and Scott Nestor. Bisenius was tagged for four runs on two hits and two walks, while Nestor allowed three runs, three hits and two free passes. Right-hander Dave Borkowski pitched a scoreless inning of work.

Pirates on the mound: Non-roster invitee Chris Bootcheck made the start for the Pirates and retired the side in order in his only inning pitched. Closer Matt Capps also escaped his inning of work unscathed, though it took a timely double play to end the inning after he walked the bases loaded on 12 consecutive pitches out of the strike zone. Relievers Ronald Uviedo, Evan Meek and Craig Hansen each pitched perfect innings. Hansen struck out two.

Up next: The Pirates travel south on Thursday to face the Red Sox at 1:05 p.m. ET in Fort Myers, Fla., with righty Ian Snell scheduled to pitch the first two innings for Pittsburgh. He will be followed by starting candidates Ross Ohlendorf and Jimmy Barthmaier, as well as relievers Denny Bautista and Sean Burnett. Lefty Jon Lester will make the start for Boston.
