Pirates Press Release
Pirates Charities to host stationary cycling event on Federal Street
Debbie Coonelly and Susan Koeppen Co-Chair "Pedal for Pirates Charities" Event
Pirates Charities, the official philanthropic arm of the Pittsburgh Pirates, today announced the "Pedal for Pirates Charities" event scheduled for May 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. This unique 100-bike, non-competitive cycling event will take place on Federal Street outside of PNC Park prior to that night’s 7:05 p.m. game vs. the Houston Astros.
Fans are encouraged to take advantage of this exciting one-of-a-kind opportunity as local instructors will lead the outdoor stationary cycling event. The program consists of four one-hour class sessions and participants have the option to either "buy" a bike for the entire four hours (for a donation of $200), or "rent" a bike by the hour (for $50 per hour).
Debbie Coonelly, wife of Pirates President Frank Coonelly, and KDKA-TV anchor Susan Koeppen will co-chair the event. All proceeds will benefit Pirates Charities and the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh’s "Building Bridges" program.
"We are delighted to be partnering with the Y on this unique, outdoor event at PNC Park," said Bob Nutting, Chairman of the Pirates and Pirates Charities. "Pirates Charities and the Y share a common goal of encouraging youngsters in our community to be active and develop healthy habits. We greatly appreciate Debbie and Susan’s efforts and are looking forward to a terrific event."
"Pirates Charities and the Y have done a great job developing this event that is sure to be a wonderful afternoon promoting health and fitness, as well as raising money for two terrific organizations," said Rig Riggins, YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh President and CEO. "By participating in this event, we can lead by example and demonstrate that being active is good for you – and can also be a lot of fun."
Fans unable to ride in the event can still take part by electing to become a "Ghost Rider." By raising money for the event, Ghost Riders become eligible for special prizes. Ghost Riders and participants who raise the below, specified donations above their registration fee will be eligible to receive one of the following items:
