SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have tendered contracts to 31 players for the 2013 season. Already under contract for 2013 were right-handed pitcher Huston Street, left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke, catchers Yasmani Grandal and Nick Hundley, infielder Jeudy Valdez and outfielders Kyle Blanks, Chris Denorfia, Mark Kotsay, Cameron Maybin and Carlos Quentin. In addition, the club has non-tendered left-handed pitcher Juan Oramas. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.
Oramas, 22, went 3-4 with a 6.37 ERA (25 ER/35.1 IP) and 33 strikeouts against 16 walks in eight starts for Double-A San Antonio this past season. The southpaw underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery in June 2012. Originally signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent in November 2006, he has gone 25-19 with a 3.24 ERA (126 ER/350.0 IP) and 387 strikeouts against 118 walks in 92 games, 58 starts, over parts of five minor league seasons (2007-08, 2010-12) in the Padres organization. Oramas also spent a year in the Mexican League in 2009, going 9-1 with a 2.31 ERA (23 ER/89.2 IP) and 89 strikeouts against 44 walks over 25 games, 14 starts, that season.
With today’s announcements the Padres currently have 39 players on their 40-man roster, as well as two players on the restricted list.
