The Nationals claimed corner infielder Mauro Gomez off waivers from the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Gomez hit .249 with an .843 OPS, 29 homers and 73 RBIs for Triple-A Buffalo this season. The 28-year-old first baseman/third baseman also slugged 21 doubles and drew 43 walks in 110 games for Buffalo.

The Blue Jays designated Gomez for assignment on Tuesday.

Gomez, a right-handed hitter listed at 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, has hit 150 homers in his past seven Minor League seasons, an average of 21.4 per year. His 29 round-trippers this year tied Nats shortstop Zach Walters, rated as the team's 12th-best prospect, for the Triple-A lead.

Gomez made his Major League debut with the Red Sox in 2012, hitting .275 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 37 games. He is a career .278/.333/.488 hitter over 10 Minor League seasons.
