Texas Rangers Receive OF Rafael Ortega on Waiver Claim from Colorado
Ortega missed second half of 2013 with fractured shin
Arlington, Texas-The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has received outfielder Rafael Ortega on a waiver claim from the Colorado Rockies.
Ortega, 22, batted .228 (36-158) with one homer, 10 RBI, and 9 stolen bases in 42 games for Double-A Tulsa of the Texas League in 2013. The left-handed batter was the Drillers leadoff hitter and centerfielder before sustaining a hairline fracture of his shin on June 20 and missing the remainder of the season. He was also sidelined from April 21-May 10 with a staph infection.
Ortega has returned to play winter ball and is currently batting .261 in 30 games at LaGuaira in Venezuela.
Signed as a non-drafted free agent by Colorado in January 2008, Ortega has played six seasons in the Rockies organization. He recorded 147 stolen bases in his first 5 minor league seasons from 2008-12 with 30 or more SB 3 times. After batting .283 with 36 steals at Class A Modesto in 2012, Ortega made his major league debut with Colorado that September, going 2-for-4 in two games. He was named as Colorado's top defensive minor league outfielder by Baseball America prior to the 2013 season.
With today's move, the Rangers have 39 players on their major league roster.
