MLB Press Release
Simon, Clippard added to National League All-Star team
Simon Replaces Teammate Cueto; Clippard Replaces Teheran
National League All-Star manager Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals announced today, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, that right-handers Alfredo Simon of the Cincinnati Reds and Tyler Clippard of the Washington Nationals have been added to the N.L.'s active roster for the 85th All-Star Game. Simon replaces teammate Johnny Cueto and Clippard replaces Julio Teheran of the Atlanta Braves. Both Cueto and Teheran started games on Sunday afternoon and have elected not to be active in the All-Star Game.
Simon has posted a 12-3 record with a 2.70 ERA. In 18 starts, he has allowed 94 hits and 28 walks in 116.2 innings pitched (75 SO). The 33-year-old Dominican Republic native will make his Midsummer Classic debut in his seventh Major League season and his third as a Red. The 6'6" hurler had pitched exclusively in relief the previous two seasons. Simon joins teammates Aroldis Chapman, Devin Mesoraco and Todd Frazier on the N.L.'s active roster.
Clippard, 29, is now a two-time N.L. All-Star, having also represented the Nationals in the 2011 Midsummer Classic. The reliever is 6-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 43 games on the year. In 40.0 innings pitched, the eighth-year Major Leaguer has scattered 31 hits and 18 walks while fanning 53 batters. The durable Clippard has pitched at least 72 games in each of the previous four seasons.
The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15th. The 85th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
