Oakland's Hatteberg wins American League Pepsi Player of the Week

Scott Hatteberg of the Oakland Athletics has been named the American League Pepsi Player of the Week for the week ending April 13.

Last week, Hatteberg posted league highs with a .607 on-base percentage, 12 hits, four doubles, and seven RBI. The A's first baseman hit safely in all six games last week, batting .522 (12-for-23) with a home run, four runs scored, 19 total bases, and a .826 slugging percentage. Hatteberg had three straight three-hit games in Oakland's series at Texas en route to achieving Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. In the series opener against the Rangers on Tuesday, he scored Oakland's first run and drove in its second in a 2-1 victory. Hatteberg hit a three-run homer in a 13-5 win on Wednesday, and then hit three doubles in as many at-bats and walked twice the next night.

Pitchers named on the ballot were Bartolo Colon (1-0, 2.77 ERA, AL-highs with 13.0 IP and 15 SO) of the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland rookie Ricardo Rodriguez (1-0, 1.38, AL-high 13.0 IP), Kansas City rookie Mike MacDougal (0.00 ERA, 3 games, 3 saves), and David Wells (three-hit shutout vs. Minnesota on Thursday) of the New York Yankees.

Other candidates for the weekly award included Cleveland's Milton Bradley (.423, 2 HR, 3 RBI, AL-highs with 4 2B and 21 TB), Seattles Bret Boone (.348, AL-high 3 HR), and Tampa Bay rookie Rocco Baldelli (Major League-best .571 average, .857 slugging, six RBI). Boone hit two home runs on Sunday, including the game-winner in the 13th inning in the Mariners' 4-3 win over the Rangers.

Hatteberg will receive a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece as the American League Pepsi Player of the Week.
