Pirates sign two Minor League free agents

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following players to minor league contracts and have invited
them to spring training:
Adam Bernero (RHP) - Signed with Boston as a minor league free agent on December 20, 2007, but
missed the entire 2007 campaign after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow on February
28. He has a career record of 11-27 and a 5.91 ERA (376.0ip/247er) in 150 games (37 starts) in
his big league career with Detroit, Colorado, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Kansas City. He ranked sixth
among American League rookies and 10th in innings pitched with the Detroit Tigers in 2002.
Elmer Dessens (RHP) - Spent time with three different organizations (Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee
and Colorado) in 2007 and went 2-2 with a 7.15 ERA (34.0ip/27er) in 17 combined games (five
starts). The 36-year-old began his career with Pittsburgh after signing with the Pirates as a non-drafted
free agent on January 27, 1993. He posted a 2-8 record and 6.12 ERA (103.0ip/70er) in 61 games
(eight starts) during his three-year career with the Pirates from 1996-98. Dessens has a career record
of 48-61, 51 saves and a 4.50 ERA (1090.2ip/545er) in 356 games (140 starts) in his big league career
with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Arizona, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Colorado.
