To help commemorate the 250th anniversary of the naming of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that the club will wear a Pittsburgh 250 patch on their home jerseys throughout the 2008 season. The Pirates will take the field for the first time wearing the commemorative patch on Monday, April 7, at 1:35 p.m. when they take on the Chicago Cubs.
"The Pirates organization is extremely proud to participate in and raise awareness of Pittsburgh's 250th Anniversary celebration. We are especially proud of the fact that the Pirates have represented this city for nearly half of those years," said Frank Coonelly, Pirates president. "The gold P that has for so long been proudly displayed on our cap represents the Pirates organization, but it stands for Pittsburgh."
"We are very proud to partner with the Pittsburgh Pirates in celebrating our region," said James E. Rohr, chairman of the Pittsburgh 250th Anniversary Commission and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. "Like the Pittsburgh region, the Pirates have a rich history and promising future. The Pirates are an integral part of our community, and we are excited that they so visibly will be sharing the Pittsburgh 250 message throughout our anniversary year."
