The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have signed free agent infielder Ramon Vazquez to a two-year contract. The announcement was made by Neal Huntington, Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager. No other terms of the deal were announced.

Vazquez, 32, hit .290 (87-for-300) with 18 doubles, six home runs and 40 RBI in 105 games with Texas during the 2008 season. He made 70 appearances (60 starts) at third base, 26 appearances (11 starts) at shortstop, 11 appearances (seven starts) at second base and one appearance at first base during the 2008 campaign.

"Ramon Vazquez is a veteran Major League player who provides us depth and protection at all positions in the infield," Huntington said. "His ability, versatility and veteran presence is a quality addition to our organization."

The left-handed hitting Vazquez hit .353 (49-for-139) with runners on base and .310 (78-for-252) with six home runs off right-handed pitchers last season.

Vazquez broke into the Majors in 2001 with Seattle after being selected by the Mariners in the 27th round of the 1995 First-Year Player Draft. In his career, he has compiled a .257 batting average, going 449-for-1747 with 79 doubles, 17 triples, 21 home runs and 160 RBI in 595 games with Seattle (2001), San Diego (2002-04), Boston (2005), Cleveland (2006) and Texas (2007-08).

Pittsburgh's 40-man roster is currently at 40 players.
