The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed the following five players, selected in this year's First-Year Player Draft.

Jose Hernandez - 23rd round - OF from theUniversity of Texas/San Antonio
Hit .360 (76-for-211) with 25 doubles, 17 home runs and 61 RBI in 55 games as a senior this year...Led team in doubles and RBI and tied for first in home runs...Played in 41 games (29 starts) at Long Beach State in 2006 before transferring to UTSA...Led the Denton Outlaws to 2006 TCL League Championship, while hitting .327 with five home runs and a TCL-best 49 RBI...Was born in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Jason Erickson - 24th round - RHP from the University of Washington
Went 5-4 with a 4.34 ERA (74.2ip/36er) in 14 games (11 starts) as senior this year...Also had one complete game/shutout...Compiled a 13-10 record and a 4.99 ERA in his four years pitching for the Huskies...Played summer ball in 2008 for the Mat-Su Miners in the Alaska Baseball League and was named his team's Pitcher-of-the-Year after going 3-3 with a 1.56 earned run average... Earned four varsity letters while pitching for White River High School in Buckley, WA...Served as team captain as a junior and senior. ...Was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 45th round of the 2005 draft.

Ty Summerlin - 30th round - SS from SE Louisiana University
Hit .327 (83-for-254) with four home runs and 44 RBI in 59 games as senior this past season...Led team in hits, doubles (24) and stolen bases (12)...Also led squad in batting (.342), slugging percentage (.542), runs (57), hits (82), RBI (60), doubles (20), home runs (8), total bases (130) and stolen bases (10) as a junior...Was a two-time Class 4A First Team All-State selection at Vancleave (LA) High School where he helped the Bulldogs to a 22-4 record and a berth in the South State semifinals his senior year...Led VHS to a 28-5 record as a junior, hitting .394 at the plate.

Patrick Irvine - 33rd round - OF from Elon University
Batted .402 with a team-best .782 slugging percentage and .533 on-base percentage this past season...His slugging percentage was the highest season-season mark in school history...Also finished the year with 14 doubles, five triples and 17 home runs while driving in 57 runs and scoring 68 runs...Was named both SoCon All-Tournament and First Team All-Southern Conference...Concluded his Elon career by ranking among the school's all-time best in the following categories: 10th in games played (202), sixth in runs (161), fifth in home runs (31) and seventh in RBI (147)...Became the fourth Phoenix baseball player selected in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, joining teammates Chase Austin (fifth round to the Florida Marlins), Cory Harrilchak (14th round to the Atlanta Braves) and Dallas Tarleton (20th round to the Colorado Rockies).

Marc Baca - 42nd round - RHP from UNLV
Went 3-1 with three saves and a 4.05 ERA (33.1ip/15er) in 21 games (one start) as a senior this season at UNLV... Played one season at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO, where he pitched and also played the outfield for the Plainsmen...Helped the team to a 29-27 overall record in 2006 and a third-place finish in the Region IX Tournament...Is a 2005 graduate of Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, where he played right field and lettered twice for the Mountain Lions...Helped the Lions win the state championship as well in 2005...Was honorable mention All-Southwest in 2004-05.
