Pirates sign 16-year-old Colombian born shortstop Dilson Herrera

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed 16-year-old shortstop Dilson Herrera from Cartagena, Colombia.
The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President and General Manager Neal Huntington
and Pirates Director of Latin American Scouting Rene Gayo.
Herrera hit .292 (21-for-72) with five doubles and five RBI while also going 6-for-7 in stolen base attempts
in 20 games this year while playing in a men's wood bat league this summer in his native
Cartagena, Colombia. He also played second base and shortstop in the league while recording a total
of 39 putouts and 72 assists in the field.
Herrera is one of four current players (also Yhonathan Barrios, Jordan Galvez and Oderman
Rocha) from Colombia in the Pirates minor league system.
"Dilson is a player we have been scouting since he was 13-years-old," said Gayo. "He has well above
average bat potential, above average run potential, a solid average arm, above average defensive
potential and a natural ability to steal bases."
