LaRoche, McLouth go deep in opener

Wilson adds three RBIs as Pirates overpower Phillies

at Clearwater, Fla.
Thursday, February 28

Phillies at the plate: Ryan Howard charged up the fans by demolishing a Bryan Bullington pitch for his first Spring Training home run. The three-run shot, which highlighted a five-run third inning, landed in the swamp beyond the right-field fence. Pedro Feliz added two more hits and is now 4-for-5 as a Phillie.

Pirates at the plate: Adam LaRoche hit a long homer to right-center field, his first of two hits, in the second. In a five-run fourth, Nate McLouth tagged Joe Savery for a three-run homer. Josh Wilson added two hits and three RBIs.

Phillies on the mound: Kyle Kendrick soft-tossed his way through three innings, allowing one run on the homer by LaRoche. Savery, the team's top pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, made his Grapefruit League debut and worked one inning, surrendering five runs on four hits.

Pirates on the mound: With ace Tom Gorzelanny scratched with left shoulder tightness, Phil Dumatrait started and tossed two scoreless innings. Bullington, a former No. 1 overall pick, wasn't as fortunate, surrendering five runs -- four earned -- in the third.

Grapefruit League records: Phillies (1-1), Pirates (1-0).

Up next: The Pirates play a pair against the Phillies in Bradenton on Friday. Ian Snell is scheduled to start at McKechnie Field against J.D. Durbin at 1:05 p.m. ET, while Jimmy Barthmaier starts the "B" game against Brett Myers.
