Pirates finalize Minor League staff for 2012

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates have finalized their Minor League coaching, coordinator and staff assignments for 2012 and have announced that they will retain the managers for four of the six U.S.-based affiliates.

Dean Treanor (Triple-A), P.J. Forbes (Double-A), Carlos Garcia (Class A Advanced) and Tom Prince (Gulf Coast League) will all be returning to the managerial roles they held in 2011. Prince will also serve as the organization's catching instructor.

Rick Sofield, who most recently coached at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, will step in to manage the low Class A club in West Virginia. Dave Turgeon will be leaving that club to manage short-season State College. Turgeon served as West Virginia's pitching coach last season.

Since the Pirates pulled out of Venezuela, the organization will be fielding a pair of clubs in the Dominican Summer League. Those teams will be managed by Larry Sutton and Gera Alvarez. Sutton is new to the organization and will also serve as the Pirates' Dominican field coordinator. Alvarez spent 2011 as a player/coach with West Virginia.

Jeff Livesey (hitting), Kimera Bartee (outfield/baserunning) and Gary Green (infield) return to the coordinator roles they filled last year. Other coordinators will include: Brad Fischer (field), Scott Mitchell (pitching), Miguel Bonilla (assistant pitching) and Tyson Holt (mental conditioning).

Holt takes over the coordinator position that most recently belonged to Bernie Holliday. Holliday will remain with the Pirates, but has been promoted to director of mental conditioning.

Frank Kremblas (special assistant to Minor League operations), Woody Huyke (advisor to Minor League operations) and Pablo Cruz (advisor to Latin American operations) will also be a part of the Minor League staff.

Additions on the athletic performance side include Mike Winkler (strength and conditioning coordinator), Jeremiah Randall (rehab coordinator) and Joe Hughes (athletic development coordinator).
