Burnett activated from DL to make debut

Pirates right-hander A.J. Burnett has been reinstated from the disabled list and will start Pittsburgh's game Saturday night against visiting St. Louis in place of the injured Kevin Correia.

Burnett began the season on the 15-day DL to rehab from surgery on his right orbital bone, which was fractured during a Feb. 29 bunting drill in Spring Training. He had surgery on March 2 in Pittsburgh and returned to Bradenton, Fla., on March 9 to befgin his rehab program.

Correia, who was scheduled to pitch Saturday night, is experiencing discomfort in his left side. The club said in a release that a corresponding roster will be made prior to the game.

Burnett, entering his first season with the Pirates after a tumultuous tenure with the Yankees, made three rehab starts -- the most recent coming with Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday night. He was scheduled to have one more, on Saturday night with Double-A Altoona, but will pitch for the big league club instead.

Burnett posted an 8.53 ERA in two losses with Class A Bradenton before allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings for Indianapolis on Monday. He was expected to throw close to 100 pitches for Altoona on Saturday.

The first pitch against the Cardinals is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET at PNC Park.
