Pirates claim pitcher Hisanori Takahashi
The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed left-handed relief pitcher Hisanori Takahashi (pronounced hee-son-or-ee) off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington. The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 25-man roster once Takahashi reports to Pittsburgh.
The 37-year-old Takahashi went 0-3 with a 4.93 ERA (42.0ip/23er), 1.17 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 42 relief appearances this year for the Angels. He was scored upon once in his last seven appearances
(5.2ip) with Los Angeles before being optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on August 19.
Takahashi went 79-66 with a 3.70 ERA (1289.0ip/530er) in 245 games (202 starts) from 2000 to 2009 with the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese Central League before signing with the New York Mets. During his rookie season in 2010, he went 10-6 with a 3.61 ERA (122.0ip/49er), 1.30 WHIP and 114 strikeouts in 53 games (12 starts) before signing with the Angels on December 2, 2010.
In 2011 with the Angels, Takahashi went 4-3 with two saves, a 3.44 ERA (68.0ip/26er), 1.22 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 61 relief appearances.
