Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of Major League Baseball, today announced that Chris Resop was named the Pirates' 2012 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Today marks the eleventh annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente's legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Resop is one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.
The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet pays tribute to Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The Award is named for the 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
Resop is very active in the community as a large part of his outreach is focused towards pediatric cancer awareness and support. He works with organizations in his home state of Florida such as the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and All Children’s Hospital, as well as charities in the greater Pittsburgh area including the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
This past off season Chris and his wife Kara raised more than $10,000 for the All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Chris also raised almost $12,000 for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation through the “Cut-For-A-Cure” fundraising event.
During the 2012 season, Resop co-hosted the “Bowling with the Bucs” charity event that raised more than $30,000 for Pirates Charities and the funds were designated for monthly VIP (Very Important Pirates) Parties that were held throughout the season at PNC Park. He is also active with teammate’s charity events such as Jeff Karstens’ “Karstens Kares” event to benefit Pirates Charities and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Charlie Morton’s military appreciation events.
Resop will receive the award today in an on-field pregame ceremony before the Pirates host the Milwaukee Brewers at PNC Park.
