Pirates sign Dominican third baseman Herrera
By Tom Singer / MLB.com
The Pirates have signed Dominican third baseman Johan Herrera, who becomes the fifth international prospect to sign with the club this year. The 17-year-old Herrera is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound left-handed hitter rated to have an average arm and to be weaker defensively than at the plate by Baseball America, which first reported the signing. Herrera was signed for $300,000, which brings the Bucs' international expenditure to approximately $2.1 million, leaving them with about $800,000 in their international bonus pool for 2012. Herrera's signing follows earlier agreements with third baseman Julio De La Cruz, outfielder Michael De La Cruz and catcher Yoel Gonzalez -- all also from the Dominican Republic -- and Australian shortstop Sam Kennelly.
