The second annual Pirates Charities Golf Classic took place Thursday, July 19, 2007 at the Fox Chapel Golf Club. All proceeds benefited Pirates Charities and its associated organizations and programs that place a special emphasis on supporting youth health, youth fitness and youth education.

The funds raised at the inaugural tournament in 2006 were used to open the Pirates Community Baseball Center at the Shadyside Boys & Girls Club. This facility was created by transforming a dilapidated, unused indoor swimming pool into a year-round, indoor baseball and softball facility that is used by 2,000 to 3,000 inner city youth each year.

Participants bid on silent auction items.

A dinner reception followed the day of golf.

In recognition of the Pirates 40th anniversary in Bradenton and the ballclub's increased philanthropic efforts throughout the organization, Pirates Charities hosted their inaugural Pirates Charities Spring Training Golf Classic in Bradenton, Fla., on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008. The tournament was held at the River Strand Golf & Country Club. The event was held to raise money toward the purchase of a special Pirates-themed used school bus for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County.

In addition to the strong support that the Bradenton community provided for the tournament, several Pittsburgh-based Pirates partners also joined in the fun. Hoechstetter Printing, WPAHS, FSN Pittsburgh, Team Scotti, ARAMARK and Dick's Sporting Goods all contributed to make this inaugural event a success.

Pirates celebrities participating in the tournament included president Frank Coonelly, GM Neal Huntington, pitching coach Jeff Andrews and third base coach Tony Beasley; players Tom Gorzelanny, Paul Maholm, Matt Capps, John Grabow, Jack Wilson, Sean Burnett, Adam LaRoche, Xavier Nady, Jaret Wright and Neal Walker; Pirates alumni Kent Tekulve, Bill Mazeroski, Jim Rooker, Bill Virdon, Manny Sanguillen, Milt May and Steve Blass; and Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown.

This first-time event netted more than $19,000! Plans are already underway for next year's Spring Training Golf Classic.
