COACHING CAREER

Begins his 21st season in professional baseball as a coach or a manager and his 12th season in the Major Leagues (ninth as a coach, three as a manager)...The 2012 postseason was Russell's first trip to the Major League playoffs as a player, coach, or manager...Russell spent the 2008-10 seasons as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, compiling a 186-299 record (119-124 at home, 67-175 on the road)...Prior to being named manager of the Pirates on November 5, 2007, Russell had served the previous two seasons as manager of Philadelphia's Triple-A affiliate (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2006 and Ottawa in 2007)...He was named International League Manager of the Year after guiding Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to an 84-58 record and the Northern Division title in 2006...For his efforts in 2006, he served as manager at the 2007 International League All-Star Game...From 2003-05, Russell served as the Pirates Third Base Coach and Major League catching instructor...Began his career as a manager in the Minnesota organization, where his teams posted five winning seasons in his eight years...He was named 2002 Minor League Manager of the Year and "Best Managerial Prospect" by Baseball America after his Edmonton club captured the Pacific Coast League crown...Russell was also tabbed as the Eastern League's "Top Managerial Prospect" by Baseball America after guiding the New Britain club to an 81-58 record and a first place finish in 1998...In 10 seasons as a minor league manager, Russell compiled a 666-667 record and three division championships...In addition to his managerial career, Russell also led the Phoenix Desert Dogs to a 25-19 record and a second place finish in the Arizona Fall League in 2002 and was managing Peoria in 2007 when he was named manager of the Pirates...Russell managed in Venezuela during the 2006 offseason and led the Maracaibo club to the playoffs for the first time in six years.
